What You Seek Is Determined By Your Location

Paul continues to hit pretty hard; especially for those of us who follow Christ is an affluent culture and time.  What do you really “seek”?  What do you really desire?  Would you be willing to give up financial security and luxury if it meant that you had intimacy with Jesus or if it meant that God could use you to point others to Himself?  When you made your goals for 2019; how did the fact that you belong to Jesus influence those goals.  Here are the first four verses of chapter 3 of Paul’s letter to the Colossians:  “If then […]

Bandages Don’t Kill Germs

When I was a child and had the occasional bad scrape or cut I wanted my mom to put a bandage on it. That’s all I wanted.  However, she would inside on examining the wound and inevitably, she would want to clean it out.  I didn’t want it cleaned out because cleaning out the wound was painful. I just wanted her to put a bandage on it.  What I didn’t understand was that the bandage wouldn’t kill the germs or prevent further damage from happening from the inside.  The bandage would protect the wound from the outside but that wasn’t the main […]

“Do Not Touch” Really Doesn’t Keep You From Touching

When you see a sign that says, “Wet Paint, Do Not Touch”, do you feel an urge to touch that object anyway?  Some would say “no” and others would say “yes”.  Avoiding sin is important and warning signs can certainly be helpful; but rules and regulations that we put into place are not the most effective way, and often are not effective at all, in conquering the desires of the flesh.  Man made religion, and even those that follow Jesus have struggled with using rules and rituals to help draw close to God and avoid sin.  The Colossians were falling […]

You Can Eat That If You Want To

I mentioned previously that one of the reasons for writing Colossians was to correct false teaching that had risen up in the church.  One of the false teachings that has continued throughout church history in various forms is the replacement of Christ with special acts of man; celebrations and rules/regulations that are designed to take the place of following Jesus. The natural inclination of man is to “please” God by doing things and also it pleases man to attempt to control the behavior of others, often under the guise of religion.  Jesus dealt with this often while He was on earth.  […]

Some Things Jesus Has Done

In verse 10 Paul wrote that the believer is “complete” in Jesus.  Some of what that “completion” looks like is listed in verses 11-15:  “11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that […]

Divine Power in Human Form

Colossians 2:9-10 read like this:  “9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.”  The context tells us that “Him” is referring to Jesus.  One of the most interesting and marvelous aspects of Christianity is the incarnation of Jesus Christ.  As God, fully God, completely God, Jesus was also fully and completely human.  In Jesus dwells all the “fullness” of the Godhead in a human body.  I can’t explain that but I don’t think I need to explain it…I just need to accept it as revealed truth from […]

Cheaters and Cheated

My heart is heavy for all the people I know who have been cheated; who have been taught something false about God and Jesus and who have embraced it.  Usually it’s been embraced with little to no investigation…it just sounds good.  Or, what I think most likely happens, people do not want to answer the call of commitment that they hear from God’s word, so they are quick to embrace something that is much easier, especially if it denigrates God’s word.  This phenomenon isn’t new.  It was happening in Paul’s day.  Many theologians believe that a form of false teaching […]

Being Established in the Faith

Imagine living in a time when communication was extremely difficult.  In the first century there was no postal service or even pony express.  Very few things were written down and to convey a message to someone required a messenger and travel was dangerous.  The New Testament letters that Paul writes, like the one here in Colossians, contain important truth that these Colossians needed to hear.  Paul couldn’t often be with them in person so these letters were invaluable to him and to the churches.  Here is what he writes in verses 5-7:  “5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet […]

Have You Been Persuaded?

Colossians 2:4 gives a clear warning to followers of Jesus.  “Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words”.  Paul has just finished saying that in Christ are hidden the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.  These treasures are not found in your college philosophy class or an internet article claiming that the Bible is just a collection of stories or that Jesus was just a good teacher.  I’m amazed and concerned at how little it seems to take to turn people away, to persuade them that their faith is wrong.  If you’ve been persuaded to move away […]

Hidden Treasure

As a child, “hidden treasure”, held a certain allure to me.  I always hoped to find a chest hidden in the backyard are under a pile of wood.  I always wanted a metal detector to use to find treasure.  Of course, I never found any treasure.  In fact, to this day I’ve never operated a metal detector.  I think many have or had a fantasy to find hidden treasure.  As Paul continues in his letter to the Colossians we read that hidden treasure is right under our noses.  Here are verses 1-3 of chapter 2:  “For I want you to […]
